AN ACT TO CREATE THE PRE-COLLEGE EARNED CREDIT ACT; TO PROVIDE FOR EARNED CREDIT TOWARD COLLEGE TUITION; TO REQUIRE THE STATE INSTITUTIONS OF HIGHER LEARNING TO ESTABLISH POLICIES AND PROCEDURES TO IMPLEMENT THE PROVISIONS OF THIS ACT; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:

SECTION 1. (1) Each school district is authorized to engage the services of two (2) eleventh or twelfth grade students in good academic standing to serve as tutors in various subject areas at times to be determined by the school district. In lieu of cash payments, the students performing such tutorial duties will be awarded credit to be applied against tuition in any State Institution of Higher Learning. Such payment may be up to the payment of one (1) full semester of tuition as a resident student in the institutions of higher learning in Mississippi.

(2) The State Institution of Higher Learning shall establish policies and procedures necessary to implement the provisions of this section. Nothing in this section shall prohibit or act as a hinderance for any student receiving financial aid from any source for which such student has otherwise met eligibility requirements.

SECTION 2. This act shall take effect and be in force from and after July 1, 1999.
